Understanding Different Types of IUDs

Hormonal IUDs
Hormonal IUDs are small, T-shaped devices inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy. They release levonorgestrel a form of progestin, which is not the same as progesterone. Hormonal IUDs can also reduce menstrual bleeding and cramps. They are effective for 3-8 years, depending on the IUD.

Copper IUDs do not contain hormones but copper interacts with estrogen causing hormone imbalances. They can be effective for up to 12 years.
